The Martha W. Griffiths Michigan Rare Book Room is home to a collection of nearly 20,000 items, from pioneer accounts to Civil War rosters. The Rare Materials Collection focuses primarily on natural history, law, angling, travel and exploration, Native Americans and Michigana. Of special note is a collection of almost 5oo pieces of Michigan-related sheet music. Local history materials provide researchers a sense of time and place, while exhibitions showcase collection highlights.
The Library Foundation was instrumental in building the Martha W. Griffiths Rare Book Room by raising nearly $1,000,000 for its construction. The Foundation continues to support the growth of the Collection through generous donations of many Michigan history-loving supporters who wish to preserve Michigan’s unique history for generations to come.
